Go Green with Geothermal Energy!  Geothermal Energy Use Ticks the Right Boxes with Planning Authorities

As building energy use regulations tighten to incorporate the UK’s ambitious renewable energy targets, planning applications and development proposals that include geothermal energy use will increasingly be viewed more favourably by planning authorities.

To help you make the most of opportunities linked to low carbon footprint, renewable energy and sustainability, Sirius has launched a total ‘Ground Source Heat’ package and can offer practical advice and ideas about the most suitable and economical ground source heat system for your development.  Did you know, for example, that a well-designed ground source heat system has energy efficiencies of about 350%, compared to about 80% from modern domestic gas condensing boilers?

Total Package

Unlike Germany, Holland and Sweden, the UK industry is only just beginning to latch on to the potential of ground source heat systems and Sirius hopes its new geothermal package will help open up the market for British companies.  Having teamed up with other key geothermal energy design and distribution businesses, Sirius can undertake and deliver the following aspects of geothermal energy services from a single source:

  • Building energy demand design and analysis

  • Geothermal potential desk study

  • Geothermal site investigation, including in-situ thermal testing

  • Geothermal modelling and ground source heat array design

  • Geothermal well drilling and/or installation of heat recovery loops

  • Installation of heat pumps and under floor heating systems

Geothermal Energy Reality

The geothermal energy trend is being driven by the UK’s bold commitment to reduce our national carbon footprint and use 30% renewable energy by 2020.  Given that currently the UK only uses 4.8% renewable energy, it leaves us with an 11-year mountain to climb.

About 50% of our nation’s energy is used for heating homes, offices, retail, commercial, leisure and public buildings.  Typically, 50-75% of this heating energy demand can be met by geothermal energy, in addition to solar, wind-power and other renewable energy power sources.  However, for many individual buildings, 100% of the heating (and cooling) energy demands can be met by geothermal energy, where geological and hydrogeology conditions and space availability are favourable – providing the building design, preliminary assessment and geothermal modelling are done properly!

The UK enjoys constant, year-round underground temperatures, characteristically between 10-13 0C, so wherever you live in the country, ground source heat is available to you.  What’s more, in the summer, you can dump excessive heat energy from air-cooling and conditioning systems back into the ground, where it can be stored up for extraction again in the winter.
