Sirius Investigates on the A1

Following the successful completion of a programme of highways site investigation works for WSP Carillion under the Area 12 M62 management contract, Sirius has been awarded a major phase of site investigation along 22 kms of the A1 from Dishforth to Barton.

The site investigation, which is integral to the A1 improvement scheme, forms part of the overall Highways Agency's programme for upgrading this strategically important route.  This particular stretch of the improvement scheme is valued at £209 million and is being undertaken by a joint venture company composed of Morgan Est and Carillion.

The improvement works will not only widen the highway, but also allow significant environmental improvements for both nearby residents and the local ecology.  Low-noise road surfacing will be installed to reduce noise levels along with noise-barrier fencing.  Provision is also being made to protect the natural habitat of deer, badgers, great crested newts, otters and migratory birds along the route.

The site investigation works for overhead communications structures will take three years, and involve the sinking of approximately 31 cable percussive and rotary cored boreholes to depths of up to 20 metres.

Sirius Geotechnical and Environmental is supervising and reporting on the works for A1D2B engineers AECOM, whilst Sirius Drilling Services is undertaking the drilling works which involve three Dando 2000 cable percussive rigs and an SM14 rotary rig.

As well as the main package of works, additional investigation boreholes have also been awarded to Sirius, with large diameter cable percussive boreholes being taken to depths of 45 metres.
