A LESSON IN PREPARATION

27/04/10 - A LESSON IN PREPARATION

Bricklaying students from Calderdale College had a lesson in ground preparation from Sirius staff today.  16 students made a site visit to Sirius’ Keighley Road site to understand the complexities of ground preparation prior to construction of Residential properties by client Redrow (Yorkshire).  Sirius Site Manager Nigel Johnson gave the site tour and talk along with Commercial Manager, John-Paul Bowden.  The talk was loosely based around site re-profiling, foundation types, and the Re-Engineering of fill materials beneath a former Railway Cutting.  The visit hoped to give students an insight into the various processes applied to a site before laying bricks and mortar.  Andy Jowett, Calderdale College Lecturer said ‘the visit has been invaluable, it is much easier to explain practices on-site as it happens than in the classroom’.  The College hope to arrange further visits to the Keighley Road site, as the development progresses.

30/03/10 - SIRIUS GROUP COMPLETES £3MILLION DONSIDE URBAN VILLAGE LAND REMEDIATION PROJECT

Leading land remediation and site investigation company, the Sirius Group, has announced the completion of a major contract in the North-east.

The company, which established its first permanent Scottish office in Aberdeen at the end of last year, has successfully concluded a long-term land remediation project on the site of the former Donside Paper Mill, at Tillydrone.

The Donside Urban Village project will eventually see the site of the former paper mill transformed into a modern, mixed use development featuring over 200 affordable homes, 70 private properties and retail and commercial premises.

The contract, with Devanha Group – a consortium of local housing associations – was worth around £3million, and saw the Sirius team in Aberdeen provide a wide range of specialist services, including undertaking all remediation and decontamination work on the 25 acre site.

Patrick Kane, Sirius Group Director, says he is pleased the significant contract has been concluded successfully.

He said: “The scope of this project required us to carry out a great deal of specialised work over a prolonged period of time to get the site to the stage that it is at now, and I am delighted we have now completed the contract – our first one of this size in the North-east.

“We are confident that our decision to establish a permanent presence in Aberdeen will prove to be a fruitful one for Sirius. This was the ideal project for us to showcase within the North-east the fully integrated range of services which we offer and we are now currently involved in a number of interesting discussions about potential new opportunities which I believe will enable us to continue to grow our presence, not just in the North-east, but across Scotland.”

Sandy Murray, Chief Executive of Tenants First Housing Co-operative, commenting on behalf of the Devanha Group, said: “We have been impressed by the professionalism and integrity of Sirius, both as consultants and contractors on this project.”

The Sirius Group, which was founded in 2003 and specialises in providing solutions for contaminated land and geo-technical problems, currently employs around 120 staff across the country. As well as within Riverside House, in Aberdeen, the Group has bases in Leeds, Durham, Runcorn and Nottingham.

14/07/08 - Sirius - Durham Allcomers Regatta results

Sirius entered two crews in the Durham Allcomers Regatta held on the River Wear on Saturday 28th June, with the sun shining down on the 18 crews entered. Although the mixed crew of Alastair Cook, David Brooks, Leanne Rayner and Sarah Hutchison rowed well, a combination of poor starts and rickety boats meant their challenge was doomed early on. However, the mens crew comprising Rob Schofield, Chris Brady, Phil Brown and Iain McLean, despite losing in their first heat, won through the reparche to the final, where they lost narrowly by half a length, failing to regain the trophy won last year.
